West Virginia

The only state to lie exclusively within the Appalachian Mountains, West Virginia is a magnet for history hunters and outdoor sports enthusiasts. Although the whole of state is rich in mountain scenery and natural resources, it is, in fact, divided into nine different regions. If you're keen to explore all this unique state has to offer, look no further than Alamo, the nation's largest vacation car rental provider. With a pick up and drop off location conveniently situated in on Route 219 in Lewisburg, Greenbrier Valley, an online booking facility and a range of reservation deals you'll find we have your car rental covered.

If you're a history buff, a tour of West Virginia's Civil War sites and battlefields, brought to life with re-enactments, is a must. West Virginia is the only state that traces its origins directly to the Civil War, when it broke away from Virginia. A key border state throughout the war, the terrain - a combination of forest-clad mountains, lakes, rivers and fertile valleys - makes for a perfect road trip, particularly in the fall when the foliage is at its best, and small town fall festivals are in full swing. You could follow the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike, the Midland Trail passing through the main cities of Charleston and Huntington, or the Washington Heritage Trail.

West Virginia is an important centre for the coal and salt-mining industries, but much of the dramatic terrain is now protected and preserved for visitors in national parks, open to campers, hikers, mountain bikers, climbers and fishermen. Outdoor sports get wild here: there are plenty of caves, many of them limestone caverns forming what's known as the Saltpeter Trail, which lies along the border with Virginia, so cave enthusiasts won't be short of sites to explore.

Whitewater rafting is another exciting option: West Virginia has some of the best rafting available east of the Mississippi. The Gauley River, called 'Beast of the East' has its most intense season for six weeks in the fall, when the water comes down from the Summersville Dam. The New River is another popular option, passing under the famous New River Gorge Bridge and through the beautiful New River Gorge National Park. A gentler introduction to the sport for families and children can be found in the Eastern Panhandle section of West Virginia, on the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers.
