Discover New Mexico with Alamo

New Mexico, the fifth largest state in the US, calls itself the Land of Enchantment and there's no question that visitors will want to start exploring its dramatic landscapes and rich history as soon as they've landed at Albuquerque International Airport. With so much to see in New Mexico, car hire is a must, so make Alamo's pick up and drop off location your very first stop before going on your way.

Alamo's priority is meeting the needs of our customers, whether it's something as small as a satnav for finding your way around, or as important as advice on state driving laws. We've partnered up with airlines, travel agents and tour operators to offer the best deals possible, so you get a convenient and cost-effective option for your holiday.

New Mexico has a strong Native American heritage and is home to the Najavo, Puebloan and Apache tribes. Colonized by the Spanish, it also has a strong Hispanic heritage and used to be known as New Spain, though it was renamed New Mexico when it won independence in 1821. There's no shortage of museums showcasing the state's history. Many of them, including the colourful Museum of International Folk Art, the New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of the Governors, are in Santa Fe, 60 miles north east of Albuquerque.

While you're up at the northern end of New Mexico, car rental gives you the opportunity to drive over the beautiful Rio Grande Gorge Bridge with its dramatic views. The Sangre de Cristo mountains, a sub range at the southernmost end of the Rocky Mountains, stretch out to the east of the Rio Grande, passing through some of New Mexico's famous national forests, popular centres for hiking, camping, climbing, and also the Pecos Wilderness. The strange name, which literally means 'Blood of Christ,' is often attributed to the mountains' rosy alpenglow at sunrise and sunset.

At the southern end of the state, the landscape becomes one of plains and mesas, rich in desert flora and fauna, protected as a series of national parks. You could spend days immersing yourself in the landscape, culture and entertainment, but be sure not to miss highlights: the Carlsbad Caverns, a UNESCO world heritage site, and the White Sands National Monument, the largest gypsum dune field in the world.
