North Dakota is near the centre of North America, rich in agriculture and fossil fuels: the western part of the state belongs to the Great Plains, and the eastern section belongs to the flat Red River Valley. Fargo is located close to the eastern state border. Take the Interstate 29 north from Fargo to go up to Grand Forks, one of the state's main cities. Here you will find the North Dakota Museum of Art and the Empire Arts Center. Alternatively, the Interstate 94 will take you west to Bismarck, the state capital, located on the Missouri River.

With its strong American Indian heritage, North Dakota is home to regular tribe pow-wows, including the United Tribes International pow-wow in Bismarck every September. It's an unmissable opportunity to experience American Indian culture, marked by parades, ornate costumes featuring jewellery, fringing and moccasins of course dancing, in which even spectators are welcome to join in.

North Dakota became the home to a large number of Scandinavian settlers, who also brought festivals of their own. In Minot, known as the Magic City and home to the Air Force base, the Norsk Høstfest takes place each September, a chance to taste the lefse or lutefisk unique to Norwegian culture. Pembina County in the north east of the state is home to the many Icelandic settlers who built the distinctive turf-roof houses there and have kept alive distinctive folk crafts like silver work and weaving.
